In most facilities pipes need to be labeled according to a code requirements. The code specifies the size of the label, the size of the text on the label, the color of the label, as well as providing recommended locations.

It is a label, attached to a pipe, that identifies and classifies the contents of a pipe and the direction of flow. It allows the hazard level of the contents to be quickly assessed and provides emergency response personal with the information they need to shut off the flow through the pipe.
